You love a particular song. The melody is awesome, the drums are magnificent but there is one problem… The mastering sucks…
What do you do? Most people probably won’t even notice the flaws, but producers, mastering engineers, … will quickly notice imperfections in tracks. Nowadays this isn’t really a problem anymore because most tracks are mixed and mastered by professional people that really know what they are doing. Most of all those people have acces to incredibly expensive material.
Old songs however, such as One by Metallica or Johnny be Goode from Chuck Berry are not always mastered great. The reasons could be anything but all you know is ‘I want to make it better’.
A lot of producers have this question, how do I decently record my guitar?
In music land there are, like always, a thousand options you can try but in general there are 2 main categories.
- Micing your amp
- Routing the Headphone jacket/Output to your interface (if available on your amp)
How do you start a song? Most people will tell you that it’s something that just strikes you…
I call that a ton of cr*p. You can kind of force yourself to make something. When you have a general idea and written it down or recorded some of it, more creative things will naturaly be added. Maybe not the first time, but when you listen to a lot of music with much variation in style, ideas will come.
A lot of musicians like to write the music before adding the lyrics. Sometimes it’s not bad to work the other way around. You can try to write a nice text and just give it a nice melody in your head. I’ve often experienced that some lyrics just give themselves a melody. It’s like listening to some of your favorite songs, most of the lyrics probably wouldn’t sound as good with another melody other than the original.
Another idea is to grab a piano or a guitar and just strum some chords and trying to sing over it, some of my friends just sit down on the couch and start singin’ random sentences. It’s not a very high quality idea but it helps to get what’s in your mind(although you may not realize it) out in the world.
I have to say that altough you can force yourself to make music, the best ideas come from coming up with ideas just out of the blue. You’re reading the paper and suddenly something hits you… You’re playing the guitar and you just happen to play a really nice riff…
There are no rules to making music and there never will be, don’t let an idea go to waste because music theory tells you it is not 100 percent like the books.
Have a great musical day.
A lot of things interest me in life. Technology, politics, psychology, sports, … But still the most profound one for me is music.
I’m yet another one where the music speaks more to me than any other means of communication.
I do not think people would say i’m a musical person when they’ve just met me, I do not believe I spread that kind of vibe.
I guess it’s always been there for some part, altough I never realized completely how deep the connection went.
The longer I wander this world, the more I realize i try to explain everything in songs, at least in my own head.
It’s something that comes naturally with me, I can’t help it.
I do however not see it as a bad thing, it helps me to get stuff done and for the most part I really enjoy life.
So from my passion with music comes my passion with creating music. It has always been something that I needed to do.
In this blog I will tell and explain you lots of things.
I will show you how to play guitar.
I will review albums, old or new.
I will explain you how to mix your own recordings.
As long as it has something to do with music it has something to do with me.
Music is our language.
